Nicolas Guillen was heavily influenced by the Harlem renaissance, specifically the poetry of Langston Hughes. The Harlem renaissance was a cultural and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem. Black writers, artists, and musicians flourished during this time. This inspired Guillen’s first successful verse collection. Guillen was a communist who later fought for the loyalists in the Spanish Civil War. He was arrested several times upon returning to Cuba because he was very outspoken about his communist ideas. When reading las obras de Nicolas Guillen, I noticed that in both poems, he points out the divides that people create due to their differences. In Balada de los dos abuelos, he points out that people will fight one another simply based on differences of ethnicity. In No sé por qué piensas tú, la voz poetica esta tratando a convince another that they are more similar than they may think. In both poems, the author points out the similarities between the groups by examining the differences. However, Balada de los dos Abuelos es mas negative y no se por que piensas tu es mas positive. Me parece que “yo” y “tu” en la poema “No se por que piensas tu” represents two different ethnic groups in Cuba at the time. Guillen was a mexcla of different races, so he tried to celebrate not only the mix of races in him, but the mix of races in Cuba through his poetry. In “No se por que piensas ti” Guillen is urging members of different ethnic groups to reevaluate the perceived differences between others.  Hay ironia en Balada de los dos Abuelos porque they are fighting eachother because they are different. However, the two groups are doing the same things, making the same choices, and have the same goals.  This es la ironia. Hay un simbolo en no se por que piensas tu. La calle is mentioned. El autor dice que: juntos en la misma calle. La calle representa el pais. Todos los grupos estan juntos en la misma pais.
